How to Plan a New Product Launch

You'll have a new offer modelled on a copy of your business, with what it adds to a year of cash flow.

Before You Start

  • Where: "Plays" in the navbar, then the "New Product Launch" Play.
  • Plan: a Structured Play, so a paid tier. Each run costs 1 credit. On the free plan, a Custom Scenario lets you add the new line by hand (see How to Try Any Change Yourself).
  • Done first: My Business set up with your numbers. See How to Import Your Books.

Steps

  1. Open the Play. On the Plays hub, click "Start New". In "Start a New Play", choose "New Product Launch".
  2. Check your offerings. "Your current offerings" lists your revenue streams. Occam uses them to suggest something that fits, and it doesn't change them. Screenshot to come: New Product Launch intro page with Your current offerings and the offering type menu (launch-intro.png)
  3. Pick the type. Under "What type of offering?", choose "Let Occam decide", "Service (clients & sessions)", "Product (units sold)" or "Subscription (recurring billing)".
  4. Describe your idea (optional). Up to 500 characters. The hypothetical Steadyroot Wellness earns nearly all its revenue from 1-on-1 coaching at $185 a session. It might write "a 6-week group coaching program for current clients, same video calls, no new software".
  5. Run it. Click "Run Play". It uses 1 credit.
  6. Read the results. "Recommendations" shows the new offer's revenue and costs. "Cash Flow Impact" compares the business before and after, in annual amounts. "Implementation Plan" lists the steps to launch. Screenshot to come: New Product Launch results on the Cash Flow Impact tab (launch-cash-flow-impact.png)
  7. Adjust it yourself. Click "Duplicate & Customize" to edit the copy's revenue, direct costs and marketing.

Tips

  • The Play shows annual amounts with no month-by-month timing, and it doesn't model inventory or equipment. For that, start a Blueprint: add the stream on "Design" at its month-24 size, stock on "Working Capital", equipment and launch marketing on "Invest", then draw when it starts and how fast it grows on "Build".
  • Name what's off the table in your idea ("no new software"). The Play works inside it.

Common Questions

Does the Play change My Business?
No. It runs on a copy, and My Business stays as it was.

Can I compare two versions of the launch?
Make a second version with "Duplicate & Customize". Each Play compares against your current business only, so read the two results one after the other. To compare two Blueprints, use Compare.
